Ideas from the Attic 2 – Day 2 – Routes into Publishing

So you’ve pinned down that great idea, you’ve written your book and you know it’s great. But how do you convince publishers of this? Join your fellow writers for this full-day workshop held at The Writers’ Block which will explore the new world of publishing. The session will be led by a panel of experts from all corners of the writing ecology – novelists, literary agents and representatives from publishing houses. Together with this fellowship of specialists, you’ll charter the untamed lands of publishing so you can plan how to scale its heights and build bridges over its treacherous pitfalls.

Routes into Publishing is just one of a number of exciting events that make up Ideas in the Attic – a mini festival that delves into ideas and where they come from. Building on the success of last year’s festival, we aim to bring writers and other creatives together to talk, listen and collaborate.

SPEAKERS

Colin Midson

Colin Midson is the director of Bookshaped, a literary consultancy specialising in PR, editorial advice and special projects. He launched Bookshaped in 2012 and has since worked with a wide range of authors and publishers. Most notably, he represented Eleanor Catton, author of The Luminaries, winner of the Man-Booker prize in 2013. He is the Associate Director of Port Eliot Festival, a multi-arts festival held in South East Cornwall each summer.

Wyl Menmuir

Wyl Menmuir is a novelist, editor and literary consultant based in Cornwall. His first novel, The Many, was nominated for the Man-Booker Prize and was an Observer Best Fiction of the Year pick. His short fiction has appeared in Best British Short Stories, Elementum Journal, Pipeline and has been published by Nightjar Press and the National Trust. He writes for Radio 4’s Open Book, The Guardian and The Observer, and is a regular contributor to the journal Elementum.

Helen Chaloner

Helen Chaloner is Chief Executive of Literature Works, the regional literature development agency for south west England. Helen moved to Devon after a decade working in publishing PR in London. For five years she ran the Arvon Foundation, known for its residential creative writing courses, followed by ten years at Farms for City Children, which connects inner-city children to the countryside through a week on a working farm.
